The former Governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Kalu, has sought the permission of a Federal High Court in Abuja to travel to the United States.Kalu made the request through an ex-parte application, which was dated August 2, 2007.
In the application, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday, the former governor said he needed to be in the US to give consent to a brain surgery on his wife, Ifeoma.
He, therefore, asked the court to direct the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to release his international passport since the surgery would be done on August 8 (today).
It could not be ascertained on Tuesday if the judge, Justice Binta Murtala Nyako, who begins her vacation on Wednesday (today), had granted Kalu’s request.
Kalu deposed to a 12-paragraph affidavit in support of the application.
An 11-paragraph affidavit of urgency and a copy of a letter from the Medical Director of Brigham Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts, Dr. Peter Black, where Ifeoma is to undergo the surgery, were also attached to the application.
The hospital is an affiliate of the Havard Medical School.
Kalu, who is facing trial for laundering N3.1bn, was granted bail on July 27, 2007.
Part of the bail conditions was that he must deposit his international passport with the court.
Others are making a N100m bond deposit in a bank and providing two sureties in like sum.
His trial was adjourned to October 9, 2007.

Former Abia State Governor, Mr. Orji Uzor kalu currently facing charges of laundering N3.1 Billion state funds may be charged for forgery in the United States. The ex-Governor is accused of forging a letter from Brigham Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts, U.S requesting his presence for his wife’s surgery.
Kalu in a letter to the Federal High Court Abuja had sought for permission to travel to the United States on the ground that “I have just received information through Victor Onochie (by fax) to the effect that my wife is due for a major surgery on 8th August in Brigham and Women‘s Hospital in Massachusetts, USA.
But the Brigham and Women Hospital, MA, through Dr. Kwan and Heather Galvin, both assistants to Dr. Peter Black, the alleged signatory to the Kalu’s letter denied knowledge of such letter.
When Pointblanknews.com confronted the Hospital with the letter, Dr. Kwan said “that is not Dr. Peter Black’s signature. It is obviously forged. This hospital does not issues such letters.”
According to Dr. Kwan, “this is strange and we are not taking it lightly. We are looking into it and we might require the police to come in.”
He disclosed that Orji Kalu’s wife, Ifeoma Ada Kalu was last seen on appointment for MRN in 1999 insisting that “there is no appointment scheduled for her.

This kind of conduct means only one thing; that Kalu is planning to run from the long arm of justice. He should be apprehended immediately and sent off to prison.
Run where? He must be stupid if he thinks running to America will save him from EFCC after all it is America that wanted us to have EFCC. If he thinks because they say he is an American citizen that one will save him, he must be a very foolish man.
Even the best lawyers in America will not stop America from bringing him back to face the music. He is just dancing Ajasco. Was it not him that said EFCC is afraid of him? So why is he planning to run now? Yeye man.
